Project Challenge

The Project’s remote location and close proximity to the railways constricted the construction capabilities. In addition, the steel material changes presented additional challenges in constructing this project. Despite the challenges and constraints, SSI was able to complete this project to the satisfaction of Salem County.

Work Performed

The project was awarded as the removal and replacement of an old timber structure bridge in the vicinity of the Salem County Line. The project consisted of pile driving, abutment construction, structural steel bents and replacement of superstructure all while maintaining sections of the existing timber substructure for optic purposes. During the design phase, the steel needed to be upgraded to carry additional loading. As a result, SSI worked with the design team to develop a plan to get heavy steel and equipment back to this remove location for minimal impact to the time and cost of the project and it resulted in upgrading of additional track which was scheduled to be done in the future resulting in less down time for the line essentially completing two projects for the county at the same time.
